Joins Corning as a Process Engineer.
The first step of a twenty-eight-year continuous tenure. Begins on the factory floor, learning the language of processes, yields and standard work.
1988Operations
Plant Management & Operational Leadership.
Takes on progressively larger operational roles. Earns a reputation for reading the line better than the data — and then demanding that the data catch up.
1994Commercial
Moves into General Management of a specialty display business.
First true P&L ownership. Beginning of the long arc that will take Corning Display Technologies from a specialty line to a global platform.
1999Platform
President, Display Technologies.
Leads Corning's emerging LCD glass platform during its formative commercial years. Anchors the fusion-draw manufacturing culture that will define the category.
2003Executive
Executive Vice President of Corning Incorporated.
Promoted into the executive leadership team with responsibility spanning technology, manufacturing and multiple business units.
2005Vice Chairman
Named Vice Chairman.
Elevated to Vice Chairman — a role from which he helps steward Corning's transformation into one of the most consequential materials-science companies of the digital age.
2007President & COO
Appointed President & Chief Operating Officer.
Takes operating responsibility for the company's global businesses, manufacturing, technology and engineering. The office he will later describe as “the conscience of the firm.”
2008Crucible
Leads the company through the global financial downturn.
Protects the R&D and capital posture through the 2008–2009 cycle. The discipline of investing through downturns is later credited as a precondition for the post-crisis rebound.
2010Transition
Retires from the operating role.
Concludes twenty-eight years of continuous service to Corning Incorporated. Begins the next phase of work — as advisor, board member and public industrial conscience.
